About Us

Wisconsin Fire Inspectors Association

President’s Report

As of July 17, 2025, the United States Fire Administration has reported 30 home fire fatalities in the State of Wisconsin. Alarmingly, we remain on pace to exceed the five-year state average of 47.8 residential fire deaths per year. Even more concerning is the national trend: between 2014 and 2023, residential structure fires decreased by 6%, while residential fire deaths increased by 5%. This disconnect suggests that the nature of fires - not just their frequency - is becoming more dangerous.

While we may never be able to pinpoint all the contributing factors behind this shift, one clear influence is the growing presence of lithium-ion batteries in homes and consumer products. We know and understand that fires today behave differently than they did even a decade ago. The synthetic materials and plastics common in modern homes burn hotter and faster, but when combined with the volatile energy stored in lithium-ion batteries, the result can be catastrophic. These batteries, when damaged, improperly charged, or exposed to heat, can enter thermal runaway and ignite with little to no warning - adding a new and serious dimension to household fire risks.
